Delivery of the Proclamation and the National Flag

This morning we received a special visit from Sergeant Denis McGarry and his colleague Colin Sheehan from Collins Barracks, Cork. They presented our school with the national flag and a copy of the Proclamation of the Irish Republic as part of initiatives to mark the centenary of the 1916 Rising.
Sergeant McGarry read the proclamation with the assistance of two of our 6th class girls. He told the children about the origin of the Irish flag and the history surrounding it. He then presented the flag to two of our sixth class students. Following the presentation, the soldiers were happy to answer the children's questions. We concluded the ceremony by the fifth and sixth class playing our National Anthem 'Amhrán na bhFiann' on the tin whistle.
We really enjoyed their visit and we are looking forward to raising our flag on the Proclamation day, March 15th. Sergeant McGarry gave the children a night off homework as a reward for their great behaviour throughout the visit!
